Sample licensing for recording artists

Music services and the streaming platforms are commercial enterprises, and so the process for licensing requires several steps. It’s helpful to understand everything that’s involved in licensing a sample for your composition. SAMPLE PREVIEW: If you have created a test mix or other sample enabling us to review how the content would be used in context, please attach a link to it in the submission form.CLEARANCE FEES: Evaluation, final licensing, and negotiating revenue and publishing splits requires several steps that incur both editorial and legal costs. Therefore there are clearance fees associated with each sample. These expenses vary depending on the particular use, but artists can expect fees based on per-minute or per-sample. These clearance fees cover set-up and mastering costs of the requested samples and setting up revenue splits on each of the tracks. From start to finish, typically this process requires several days, including time required to list the tracks with publishing services. REVENUES: Shares of revenues will be received by all participants and the splits will be negotiated. All of this will be contained in the initial license, including specific language for publishing and registration for Sound Exchange to dispense funds earned by the master. PUBLISHING: The publishing and performing rights are administered through a separate legal apparatus that provides a collection system for streams and plays to the public. For this reason, PRO (Performing Rights Organization) information is required to complete negotiations.REVIEW COPY: Before proceeding we require a review to evaluate how the materials will be used in context - in order to preserve the integrity and meaning of Alan Watts‘ message. We reserve the right to reject any tracks that we believe do not embody the spirit of Alan’s works.SUBMISSION TIMELINE: Thank you for sharing your work with us.
